World Skimming Championship, Easdale, Seil Island
Situated 16 miles south of Oban, Argyll, Easdale Island is the smallest permanently inhabited island of the Inner Hebrides. It was once the centre of a thriving Scottish slate mining industry.
The World Skimming Championships are held annually and entry is open to all ages and abilities. Each competitor is allowed 5 skims using specially selected Easdale slate skimming stones. For a skim to qualify the stone must bounce at least three times - it is then judged on the distance achieved before it sinks.
Registration for the championships takes place at Easdale's community hall from 11am on the day itself; if you would like to compete just turn up. The competition starts at 12 noon.
The island is reached by means of a 5 minute passenger ferry journey across from Ellenabeich on the adjacent Isle of Seil . The ferry is called by pressing the buttons in the ferry shed on the pier at Ellenabeich.
